As part of the Millenium Green program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is donating 100 famous and historic trees to establish groves in each of the fifty states. The goal is to encourage states to take action in reversing the loss of tree canopy by restoring urban forested areas to a recommended level of forty percent.

American Forests has been conducting an ongoing analysis of tree cover in heavily urbanized areas throughout the United States. So far regional ecosystem analyses (REAs) have been conducted in metropolitan Atlanta, Puget Sound, and Chesapeake Bay among several other geographic locations across America.

The ASLA has joined American Forests in an effort to draw national and local attention to areas that have had substantial tree loss. The two organizations are currently discussing ways that they can work together to develop an effective strategy to promote reforestation of urban areas.
