Case Study

Star Island is one of several keyes in the inlet between Miami and Miami Beach. Consequently, when the homeowners association of the lovely island community located within the City of Miami Beach approached the Public Works Department with the idea of relighting their paradise, they were given a sympathetic ear.

The criteria adopted for the selection of a lighting system was simple, and the end result spectacular. The homeowners wanted a design that would fit the flavor of the area-a prestigious residential community. The City, while endorsing this concept, stipulated the lighting levels would need to conform to IES standards and that the whole system would need to be easy and inexpensive to maintain.

Although competition was considerable, the overwhelming choice was a combination pole and luminaire that both met the City's requirements while also satisfying the aesthetic desires of the Star Islanders. A "Talisman Pole" in spun concrete combined graceful elegance with the twin benefits of direct burial and virtually no maintenance. A "Paragon" luminaire added to the unique look the residents sought, yet still met tough photometric requirements.

Despite the high-profile nature of the project, the budget was not unlimited. Thanks in great part to the economical benefits of direct buried, spun concrete poles, the budget was met with no compromises. As Gary Kokorian, the engineer with Public Works responsible for the project confirmed, "You get what you pay for. We got a quality product."

The lighting levels proved more than satisfactory, the residents love the way it looks, while long-term maintenance is confidently expected to be minimal, even in the heavily salt-laden environment of an island community. Says Joe Petrillo, Streets and Lighting Superintendent of the City of Miami Beach, "The Islanders wanted something unique; I think they got it!" LASN
