The fruits on the Solar Tree are LEDs, powered by the solar array atop the branches (inset). The base of the tree houses batteries and electronic controls for the battery charger, cable junction boxes for the solar panels, LED heads and lamps, electronic feed for connecting to the lighting grid and electronic controls for LED heads and lamps.

British designer Ross Lovegrove, in conjunction with Artemide, an Italian company specializing in designer lighting systems www.artemide.com, and Sharp solar, have worked together to come up with the Solar Tree.

The solar trees designed by British designer Ross Lovegrove, et al., have been installed in Berlin and the Piazza della Scala in Milan, among other European locals.

The structure consists of curved steel poles of different diameters with an overall height of 18 feet. There are 10 heads, each with 20 one-watt white LEDs within, capped by photovoltaic cells and supported by three-inch dia. poles. There are also 10 ?EUR??,,????'?????<

Lovegrove is reportedly working on a second-generation solar tree with branches that will move to optimize solar intake. When the sun goes down, the solar branches will return to their original positions to light the street or pedestrian way.

This different take on solar tree design (solarbaum) is collecting sun rays in Gleisdorf, Austria.
