Located in Bayfield, Colorado, this mountain-style landscape was designed by Advance Designs Waterscape, Inc. Natural stone retaining walls terrace the property and frame lawn areas, planting beds, and gathering spaces. A custom stream-style water feature uses natural boulders, river cobble, and cascading transitions before flowing beneath the home. Belgard Weston Stone benches surround an 8-foot-diameter fire pit constructed from the same material. Both the benches and fire pit are topped with Utah Buff flagstone.
A custom bridge and Utah Buff flagstone walkways provide access throughout the property. More than 3,635 square feet of flagstone is used across patios, walkways and bridges throughout the property.

More than 950 linear feet of metal edging, separates the different landscape materials and defines transitions between surfaces.
The waterfall incorporates more than 150 tons of cobblestone around the drip edge, dry riverbeds and water feature. The stonework extends throughout the water to complement the home's mountain setting.
The custom waterfalls flow beneath the home as well. More than 300 tons of boulders were used for accent rocks, retaining walls and focal points.

This luxury mountain-style landscape in Bayfield, Colorado, was designed by Advance Designs Waterscape, Inc to integrate the newly constructed residence with its surrounding forest while creating a series of functional outdoor living spaces for the entire property. Set among towering ponderosa pines with sweeping mountain views, the landscape incorporates natural stone, water, and layered plantings to complement the architecture and reflect the character of Southwest Colorado

The primary design objective was to create a landscape that respected the site's existing character while enhancing the functionality of the property. Advance Designs Waterscapes provided comprehensive design-build services from initial concept development through final installation. The process began with an extensive site analysis that evaluated topography, drainage patterns, view corridors, native vegetation, solar orientation, and the architectural character of the residence. These existing conditions informed the design and allowed the team to work with the natural contours of the site while coordinating the landscape and architecture.

The overall scope included site grading and earthwork, drainage improvements, custom water feature design and construction, natural stone hardscape installation, retaining walls, landscape planting, irrigation, outdoor lighting, and multiple outdoor living spaces. Large natural stone retaining walls terrace the property and frame expansive lawn areas, planting beds, and gathering spaces. Curved stone pathways and stair systems connect the different elevations, creating circulation throughout the landscape and leading to a circular fire pit patio that serves as a central gathering area. Massive stone columns and layered stonework reinforce the rustic architectural character of the home.

A defining feature of the project is the custom recirculating water feature that winds through the landscape and ultimately passes beneath the residence. Designed to emulate a natural mountain stream, the feature incorporates varying widths, elevations, and flow characteristics to create a dynamic watercourse. Carefully selected native boulders, river cobble, and natural stone were positioned to form cascades, pools, and gradual transitions that replicate the appearance and movement of a mountain creek. The water feature also incorporates a custom waterwheel that serves as both a functional component and a distinctive focal point, complementing the rustic character of the residence.

The landscape's hardscape, water features, planting, irrigation, drainage, and lighting systems were coordinated throughout construction to create a cohesive site. Warm architectural lighting highlights the stonework, pathways, water movement, and gathering areas after dark. Together, the natural materials, varied elevations, flowing water, and outdoor living spaces create a landscape that is closely connected to its forested setting while providing a refined extension of the home.
