At this writing, Pres. George Bush has five more days in office and the countdown to Mr. Obama?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s inauguration is on.
With most attention being focused on the state of the economy and the new president?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s stimulus package, in the background, far into the recesses, is news about plans for the George W. Bush Library at SMU smu.edu/bushlibrary. Fundraising is underway, a reported $ 3 million socked away so far, but about $297 million more is needed.
Laura Bush heads the library?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s design committee. The landscape architecture firm anointed for the project is Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates (MVVA), a respected firm with over 20 years of experience. MVVA reports design and construction of more than 350 landscapes in the U.S., Canada, France and Korea. The firm?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s work has received numerous awards. MVVA has offices in New York City and Cambridge, Mass.
Robert A.M. Stern, dean of the Yale University School of Architecture, is the selected architect for the Bush Presidential Center. The center will comprise a presidential library, a museum with permanent and traveling exhibits and an independent public policy institute. The SMU complex has a projected finish date of 2013. The library and museum will be operated by the National Archives and Records Administration.
SMU was among eight competitors for the Bush Presidential Library project. SMU was chosen as the site, in part, because the university was willing to lease land for the project. The Presidential Library Foundation, chaired by Don Evans, notes that SMU has a significant presence in Dallas and there?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s strong support for the library from the university?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s leaders, alumni and friends.
