Boston, Massachusetts
by Pia Cardinali, Arcadis

The Hardscapes Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

Arcadis designed the revitalization of The First Church of Christ, Scientist's historic 14-acre plaza and reflecting pool. Arcadis led a multi-disciplinary consultant team for the restoration of The Christian Science Plaza, one of Boston's most iconic landscapes designed in the 1970s by architects I.M. Pei and Araldo Cossutta. The Plaza has been given protected Landmark status by the Boston Landmarks Commission.

This renovation focused on the enhancement of the open space by: preserving, repairing, and restoring the character-defining features of this landmark landscape; reconstructing the reflecting pool with improved basin paving that enhances reflectivity and four-season interest while also repairing the waterproofing for the garage below; providing welcoming Plaza entrances; improving wayfinding and Plaza identity; introducing amenities to extend year-round use; expanding seating opportunities; increasing softscape and pervious surfaces.
