As the fight against buffelgrass continues, another weed is gaining territory in Sabino Canyon, Arizona.
Sabino Canyon is the home to dozens of native plants and animals of Southern Arizona. But an intruder, the Arundo, is taking over Sabino Creek and it has been up to volunteers to stop it.
The Arundo, also known as the Giant Reed, can grow up to 30 feet tall and like other invasive plants, it threatens the wildlife that thrives in Sabino.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????It has no native predators so it out competes over time; it will out compete any native plant that it?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s up against,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? says Mark Hengesbaugh, volunteer.
?EUR??,,????'?????<????????Over the last 5 years or so?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????(R)?it?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s really gotten a hold and been able to expand; it?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s similar to the phenomenon that?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s going on with buffelgrass,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? says Joshua Taiz, with the U.S. Forest Service.
Volunteers must first chop down stalks then dig up the roots. But the Giant Reed won?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t go to waste. The Pascua Yaqui Tribe uses the plant for everything from baskets to flutes and even housing.
The battle against the Giant Reed won?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??t be over anytime soon. It will take years to get rid of and that?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s when another invader will pop up.
