The 1989 ASLA Annual Meeting and Educational Exhibit invites its members to “go for the magic” this year in Orlando, Florida. Home of Walt Disney World and Epcot Center, Orlando is best known as one of the world’s major vacation destinations. But there is much, much more...
The Kennedy Space Center, Cypress Gardens, Sea World, Church Street Station and a host of other attractions offer a multitude of entertainment options. Museums, galleries, theaters and dining are a vibrant part of the area’s makeup, adding cultural flavor to a city rich with activity.
With its year round tropical climate, Orlando also provides its visitors with unlimited opportunity for outdoor recreation. The area’s rolling hills, natural parks, lakes and beaches are ideal for sailing, fishing, canoeing and backpacking.

At the annual convention, pre-meeting events include the Third Annual ASLA/NPS Historic Landscape Preservation Symposium, co-sponsored by the ASLA and the National Park Service, which will be held Thursday and Friday, November 16-17, and the Third Annual National Conference on Public Practice, devoted to Landscape Architects in the public sector, held on Friday, November 17.
Special events at this year’s convention include the LAF Roast, Council of Fellows Business Meeting and Luncheon, Fellows Investiture Dinner, LAF Breakfast, Sea World Gala, ASLA Golf Tournament, Alumni Reunions, the Annual Banquet and more than 300 exhibitors in the exhibit hall.
General Assemblies include the opening assembly, entitled “Eyes On Earth From Space,” at which renowned sculptor and environmental artist Thomas Van Sant will speak on space and the diversity of scale in a talk illustrated by a dramatic series of images simulating a fall from space onto the earth; the Student General Assembly; The State of the Art: Landscape Architecture, 1989; and the closing General Assembly, “Toward the Millennium: The Decade of the 1990s,” presented by author of the bestseller, Megatrends, John Naisbitt.
The man to meet at this year’s show is Gerald D. Patten, associate director of the National Park Service, who has been elected President of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Patten will begin his term as ASLA President November 8, 1989.
“Landscape Architects and the ASLA have a tremendous opportunity to advocate landscape values throughout the country,” said Patten through a Landscape Architecture News Digest interview. “Too often, governmental decision makers, private enterprise, and even the public do not fully understand the intrinsic value of the landscape. No profession is better placed than ours to promote public understanding of these issues.”
Patten is a member of the U.S. Government’s Senior Executive Service, the highest civil service rank in federal government. He will be in direct contact with congressmen and decision makers concerned with conservation and resource development. Patten’s involvement in ASLA includes a term as vice president, a term as vice president of the Landscape Architecture Foundation, and also has served as annual meeting program chair.
Patten spent two years in Washington, D.C. as associate director for Planning and Development Programs in the National Park System. He headed the NPS Denver Service Center, overseeing the agency’s design and construction program throughout the nation.
His education includes a bachelors degree in Landscape Architecture from California Poly, Pomona; and a masters from University of California, Berkeley. Patten studied public program management for a one-year fellowship at MIT (Cambridge, Massachusetts).
Also elected to national office as vice presidents were Grant R. Jones, FASLA, of Seattle, Washington and Helen Quackenbush, FASLA, of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Each will serve a two-year term beginning November 8, 1989.
