A Texas study shows recycled water can be a good option for irrigating turfgrass. The researchers at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station examined Type 1 recycled water, known as municipally treated wastewater, reclaimed water or effluent. The researchers specifically wanted to learn whether irrigators on the recharge zone for the Edwards Aquifer could safely use recycled water.
Researchers say with proper management the treated wastewater can produce pleasing turf without harm to the aquifer. The researchers saw a slight increase in nitrates in the recharge zone, but levels fell well within drinking water requirements. The study also found manageable increases in salt and sodium in the soil. The two-year study involved 18 field plots. Irrigation included potable water and recycled water applied at rates to replace evapotranspiration, plus recycled water applied at 1.1 times the rate of ET.
