Texas Design Awards Presented by Kay Tiller, Executive Regional Editor The 1997 Texas Chapter/ASLA Awards were presented to members from all over the state in three categories at the 1997 Texas Chapter Annual Meeting in later April in Austin. For the first time in many years, there was an Award of Excellence presented in each of the three categories of awards, design-constructed projects, design-unrealized projects, and planning and analysis. The New Mexico ASLA Chapter were the judges for this year's Texas Awards program. Paul Weathers, ASLA, of Houston was the Awards Chair. (Austin) Bartron Creek Community Master Plan ?EUR??,,????'????Honor Award HOK (Dallas) Rowlett Comprehensive Plan ?EUR??,,????'????Merit Award Carter & Burgess (Dallas) Irving Comprehensive Parks Recreation and Open Space Master Plan ?EUR??,,????'????Merit Award The Office of James Burnett (Houston) Exxon Brookhollow Campus Master Plan The Chapter Service Award was presented to Julia Baltser of Dallas for her continuing work with annual meetings, the "Texas Party" at national ASLA meetings, and here work with other section and Chapter projects. Two Environmental Stewardship Awards were also presented. State Representative Yvonne Davis of Dallas won the award for her work in the Texas legislature to promote environmental awareness and the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department was presented an award for their Community Outdoor Outreach Programs. The awards were presented by ASLA National President-Elect Tom Dunbar and Texas Chapter President-Elect Ann McGinnis at the Awards Dinner held at a restaurant on Lake Travis. Also at the dinner, the student winners of the Maurice Phillips scholarship, given each year by the Texas Chapter/ASLA to one student from each of the three Landscape Architecture programs in the state, were announced: Julie Apgar from Texas A & M University; Kirk McDonald from Texas Tech. University; and John St. Clair from the University of Texas at Arlington.
