Walk of Excellence is a Memorial Walk Honoring Those who Have Propelled TCU Athletics to Excellence by Texas Christian University
At Texas Christian University (TCU) landscape architects with Dunaway recently added to the Parrish Statues, a collection of bronze statues of various stars from TCU's athletic history. It can be found outside the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena on the west side of campus.
There are four bronze sculptures in the TCU Walk of Excellence, as it is now called. The columns and walls that house each sculpture are two-foot-tall masonry walls and are made with New Mexico travertine stone. There are new paver bands added that are meant to match the pavers at the nearby Daniel-Meyer Athletic Complex.
Among the various bronze sculptures, all of which were sculpted by David Alan Clark, stands Dutch Meyer, the football head coach at TCU from 1934 to 1952. Along with the statues are quotes attributed to these important TCU athletic leaders. This quote is from the previous statue of Dutch Meyer and reads "Fight 'em til hell freezes over. Then fight 'em on the ice!"

The Texas Christian University Walk of Excellence is a memorial walk honoring those who have propelled TCU athletics to excellence. The Walk of Excellence is located near the entry of the Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena in the Daniel-Meyer Athletic Complex. The original Walk of Excellence was built as part of the Daniel-Meyer Athletic Complex renovation, completed in 2016. The original scope included three sculpture plazas and two additional sculpture plazas were added in 2022.
The walk is a series of bronze sculptures in exterior vignettes surrounded by two-foot-tall masonry walls. These walls are comprised of a four-piece tan blend brick with a cast stone cap that matches the adjacent Schollmaier Arena. There are multiple cast stone inlays that house bronze plaques describing the bronze sculptures. New Mexico travertine stone, which is used as an accent material throughout the campus, adorns the columns flanking the vignette entry. New Mexico travertine is a colorful stone with hues of tan, brown, red, and black which adds interest to the columns.
Keystone Hardscape's Holland Stone concrete paver bands cross the walk, from column to column, and match the pavers at the Daniel-Meyer Athletic Complex to sew the spaces together. This two-foot-wide paver band is a three-color Old Town Blend using 4"x8" pavers in 6cm thickness.
In addition to the five sculpture plazas, a seven-foot-tall monument sign greets you as you enter the Walk from the east. This monument sign is also made of New Mexico Travertine and cast stone and will eventually display a bronze plaque describing the meaning behind the Walk of Excellence.
The masonry plaza walls are surrounded by Horned Frog 'Purely Purple' Crape Myrtles with Southern Live Oak trees surrounded by a manicured Bermudagrass lawn.
Each vignette includes a bronze sculpture and a variety of bronze plaques describing the four current honorees. The first sculpture you encounter as you enter the walk from the main campus and Stadium Drive is Leo R. "Dutch" Meyer, who was the head football coach from 1934 to 1952. He was also the basketball and baseball coaches, as well as the athletic director until he retired in 1963. Dutch compiled a winning football record including coaching the Frogs to a national title in 1935.
The second sculpture features Davey O'Brien. O'Brien was the famed quarterback of the 1935 national title team, who lead the Horned Frogs to a win over Southern Methodist University in the Rose Bowl. O'Brien was the first player to receive the Heisman, Maxwell, and Walter Camp trophies. He is the namesake of the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, which is presented annually.
The third sculpture honors Gary Patterson, the former head football coach of the Horned Frogs. Patterson is TCU's winningest football coach, passing Dutch Meyer's record of 109 victories. Patterson led the Horned Frogs to six conference championships and won 22 national coach of the year honors during his tenure from 2000 to 2021.
The fourth sculpture installed in 2022 honors James Cash. Cash was TCU's first Black student athlete and the first Black basketball player in the Southwest Conference. He graduated from TCU in 1969 and continued his education, earning masters and doctoral degrees from Purdue. Cash received numerous honors during his career, has served on numerous corporate boards, and is also a part owner of the Boston Celtics.
