An Award of Excellence, four Honor Awards and six Merit Awards were presented at the recent annual meeting of the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, held in San Antonio. The awards were made in two categories, design and planning/analysis. Lewis T. May of CRS Sirrine, Inc., Houston, chairman of the 1989 Texas Chapter/ASLA Awards Committee, made the announcement.
The Award of Excellence was presented to Ford, Powell and Carson of San Antonio for their project, Tiendas Del Rio, a riverwalk extension and commerce street bridge in San Antonio.
Honor Awards in Design were won by MND & Partners, Inc., Dallas, for their work on the Tommy Perkins Memorial Park in Olney, Texas; J. Robert Anderson of Austin for Schlumberger Well Services Austin Systems Center in Austin; and the SWA Group of Houston for the North Central Expressway Urban Design.
Merit Awards in Design were presented to Johnson, Johnson & Roy/lnc. of Dallas for the Dallas Fair Park Redevelopment Plan and to Harlow Landphair of College Station for the Interchange of Interstate Highway 45 and US Highway 59 near downtown Houston.
In the Planning/Analysis category, J.T. Duncan and Assoc., Inc., Plano, TX, received a Merit Award for the Wolf Pen Creek Corridor Study in College Station; RMA/ Texas Landscape Architects & Planners of Austin won a Merit Award for the Federal Prison Camp Master Plan in Bryan, TX; and Johnson, Johnson & Roy, Inc., of Dallas won A Merit Award for the Town Lake Comprehensive Plan in Austin.
Judges for the 1989 Texas Chapter/ASLA Design Awards were Diana Wilson, ASLA, Senior Landscape Architect, HOK, Inc., Washington, D.C.; John S. Steele, ASLA, Partner, McDugald-Steele, Houston; Mike Greenberg, Architectural Critic, San Antonio Express-News, San Antonio; Prof. John Rodiek, PhD, ASLA, College of Architecture, Texas A & M University, College Station, TX; and Jim Stone, Director of Park Planning and Development, City of Garland, TX.
Texas Chapter Service Awards also were presented at the ceremony. Texas Chapter/ASLA President Tom Woodfin announced the awards and made presentations to the recipients. Arthur P. “Hap” Veltman of San Antonio earned an Environmental Stewardship Award for his commitment and vision for the conservation of a livable city. The San Antonio River Authority also won an Environmental Stewardship Award for responsible planning, research and development in the public interest and an environmentally sound future. A Distinguished Service Award was given to Robert H. Green for his leadership and contributions to the profession in the State of Texas. Green is celebrating his 40th year in Landscape Architecture and was active in the first licensing bill for Landscape Architects in Texas. The 1989 Community Service Award was presented to Debra L. Mitchell of Dallas for her efforts and leadership in preserving the historic value of Dallas, Texas.
