Tenn. Turf Programs facing Axe

The Tennessee Board of Regents is considering eliminating a total of 10 academic programs from the University of Memphis and Southwest State Community College by next year.

As part of a three-year review process, TBR officials have singled out 70 programs at its 45 institutions that they consider low-performing, meaning they have few students enrolled.

At Southwest, TBR selected technical certificates in quality assurance; food preparation safety and service; basic quality and productivity; turfgrass management; and landscape management; and an associate degree in landscape and turfgrass management.

Southwest provost Joanne Bassett said the school will fight for the first three, but are reviewing the last three to see if they should be eliminated.

“The last three are the three that we will be looking at most closely. We terminate programs that are no longer needed by the community,” she said. “These programs fell below an average of 10 (students) over a five-year period.”
