Temperate Tempe, Ariz. lies just southeast of Phoenix. The mostly flat desert lands are at 1,150 feet of elevation. The local geography includes the Salt River to the north and Tempe Buttes, a volcanic rise that can be seen from the stadium of Arizona State University.
The annual rainfall is a meager nine inches, with August being the wettest month?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????1.20 inches, the rain man sayith.
Aug. 29, 2008 brought heavy winds and rain to Tempe.
Uprooting of trees and broken branches blocked streets and caused damage to roofs and cars. During Tempe?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????monsoon season?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? more than 400 city-owned trees were partially or completely destroyed, an estimated $1.2 million loss.
The good news was the damaged trees allowed locals to stock the woodpile for the upcoming winter months.
Tempe?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s Parks and Recreation Department, however, decided to revive its Trees for Tempe program to mitigate the tree damage. Trees for Tempe was a tree replacement program initiated in 2006 by Paul Bonham, a Tempe orthodontist, who pledged to donate $40 to the city for every new patient that came to his office to help replace trees uprooted from storms.
On Oct. 25, volunteers from GE Money, a Tempe company, helped replant 19 trees at the Tempe Center for the Arts.

Craig Hayton, Tempe Parks Supervisor, told the local media.
Tempe is grateful to GE Money for stepping up to begin replanting every tree lost in the storms. By partnering with the Trees for Tempe program, GE Money is setting a standard it would like to see matched by other Tempe businesses.
