The Hardscapes Issue of Landscape Architect & Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .

Originally donated by the O.C. Tanner Foundation and dedicated on May 31, 1980, the Tanner Fountain and Plaza lies in the heart of Utah State University campus just south of the Taggart Student Center. Over the past 40+ years, it has become a campus landmark and stage for student and community events. Several repairs to the fountain have occurred over the years, including a large mechanical upgrade in 2007, but due to concrete spalling and age, the University decided to replace the entire fountain and a large portion of the plaza. The scope of the project included design and construction of a larger mechanical room with safer access for maintenance workers and security from passing students. The room sits below grade between the two fountains underneath a portion of the plaza. Updated mechanical equipment, lighting, and landscaping were also included in the scope. Due to the fountain's legacy, the most important factor involved keeping the original design but replacing it with modernized concrete mixes and structural applications to ensure its place on campus for years to come.
