Tampa, Fla. Mayor Pam Iorio has refused to support National Landmark status for Kiley Gardens, a downtown park designed by landscape architect Daniel Urban Kiley. The reason is the park resides atop a crumbling parking garage, and Iorio said her priority is not preserving the park but fixing the garage and making some of the land available to the art museum. She does not want such a designation to affect those repairs.
The Florida Trust for Historic Preservation placed Kiley Park on its 2005 list of 11 Most Endangered Historic Places.
Kiley, who passed on at the age of 91, February 21, 2004, has been called a master of the modern garden.
