Symbols of the Fallen Soldiers Poppy Country Remembers

The Poppy Country (Le Pays du Coquelicot) in the Picardie region of northwest France is commemorating the WWI centennial with five years of programs. The war began July 28, 1914, and ended Nov. 11, 1918. The first battles of the Somme occurred Sept. 20-30, 1914, but the "Battle of the Somme," fought on both sides of the river here from July 1 to Nov. 18, 1916, laid waste to 67 towns and villages in the Poppy Country. In the July 1st "big push," the British Army lost 60,000 men. This peaceful view of the Poppy Country shows off its namesake"?uwild corn poppies (Papaver rhoeas).
