Survey Says... GCSAA Survey shows drop in water usage Lawrence, KS According to the GCSAA's 2000 Leadership Survey of 1,800 Golf Course Superintendents, less water is being used than was 10 years ago due to more emphasis being put on conservation. In fact, overall water use has declined even though more area is being watered. The results state that 40% of superintendents are using less water. Of these 40%, 46% are using 11%-20% less and 32% are using 20%-50% less. Also, 83% polled said they are applying water to the same or greater area of their course than they were a decade ago and 55% of these categorized the larger area by describing it as either "somewhat larger" or "much larger." "I don't know of a professional who is more keenly aware of water issues than the golf course superintendent, and I don't know of an industry that has made as large gains in the area of water conservation as the golf course management industry," said GCSAA President R. Scott Woodhead, CGCS. Reasons for this decrease include better grass selections for respective climates and computer monitored irrigation systems. "Compared to other businesses, and certainly homeowners, golf courses are among the most efficient users of water," Woodhead said. Other fun findings of the survey were that superintendents rated Jack Nicklaus the greatest golfer of all-time, Augusta National Golf Club as the top golf spot, and President Kennedy as their top choice among 20th century presidents to play a round of golf with.
