The San Diego City Council has approved a cutting edge water sub-metering ordinance for all new apartment buildings and condos. Councilmember Marti Emerald wrote and promoted this ordinance, and is very happy with Monday?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s unanimous Council vote. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?I am thrilled with today?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s vote. San Diego is now setting the standard for water conservation in our region and the state,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Emerald. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Sub-metering alone has the potential to save apartment and condo residents between 19-40 percent on water use. That?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s huge!?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Councilmember Emerald created a Water Sub-metering Working Group a year ago to craft this new ordinance. The Working Group includes representatives from the San Diego County Apartment Owner?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Association, the County Weights and Measures Department, developers, affordable housing advocates and plumbing experts; a broad-based group that created a comprehensive plan to conserve water and protect consumers. As with all metering, metered customers usually use 15 percent to 20 percent less water than un-metered customers. When the new sub-metering ordinance becomes effective June 1, 2010, San Diego will be the largest city in California to require sub-meters.
