Leading land-based planning and design firm, EDAW has held a Summer Student Program every year since l980. These programs focus on bringing hundreds of students together in one of the host offices around the world to develop a master plan for revitalizing a particular area while creating a cohesive vision for future growth opportunities. Because of the extraordinary creativity of the 2002 Summer Student Program recommendations for the Miami Civic Center area, Miami Mayor Manny Diaz and University of Miami President Donna Shalala have decided to form the Miami Partnership. Combining their resources they are looking to revitalize the Civic Center heeding the student?EUR??,,????'???s recommendations for downtown. Taking those recommendations and moving them forward to implementation is the goal of the Partnership.
Key components of EDAW?EUR??,,????'???s SSP 2002 conceptual plan for the Miami Civic Center area included uncovering the hidden beauty of the adjacent waterways, creating inviting public spaces, and reinvigorating the surrounding neighborhoods. The proposal presented to civic and community leaders provided a creative and viable plan for housing, office, retail and medical uses. Natalie Topa, a planner in EDAW?EUR??,,????'???s Alexandria office and an SSP 2002 participant said, ?EUR??,,????'??Thanks to Mayor Diaz and President Shalala our vision for this area could come true.?EUR??,,????'??
Among the goals the students set were the following:
This is especially exciting news to receive as SSP 2004 is beginning to select participants in this year?EUR??,,????'???s program. It will be set in Nassau, Bahamas and will be a tourism-based project. The students will be working on a master plan for the downtown harbor and retail district. The challenge they face will be coming up with viable recommendations that balance economic, transportation and environmental forces while enhancing historic Nassau and turning the area into an attractive, livable, twenty-four hour urban neighborhood. Knowing how well received the 2002 recommendations were should make the experience even more exciting and inspirational.
EDAW has had many innovative summer projects designed to challenge students in landscape architecture planning, resource management, economic development and related fields with hands-on opportunity. The 2003 SSP directed its attention to revitalizing the historical Gong Hua Peninsula, the traditional rest stop for Ming Dynasty Emperors on their way from the Forbidden City in Beijing to the ancestral Ming tombs in the foothills. 2001?EUR??,,????'???s project was devoted to the Denver Metro area, focusing on reducing urban sprawl while planning and designing the environment in an enjoyable, sustainable, and responsible manner.
Founded in l939, EDAW has over 1100 professionals providing a blend of landscape architecture, urban design, and environmental and economic planning services across the globe. Their collaborative approach to landscape urbanism is designed to enrich the solutions they bring to their clients.
