Stoss Landscape Urbanism, a collaborative design and planning studio based in Boston, was honored as this year's winner of the National Design Award in the category of landscape architecture by the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum.

Stoss describes itself as an ''intentionally small studio'' that ''operates at the intersection of landscape architecture and urban design and planning in an emerging field known as landscape urbanism.'' The studio has won national and international recognition for landscape projects rooted in infrastructure, functionality and ecology. Recent clients include Harvard University, Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, the federal government of Belgium, the cities of Green Bay, Milwaukee, Detroit, and others across the American Midwest, and various additional institutions and public agencies around the world.

The interests of Stoss founding principal Chris Reed of Brookline, Mass., include the impact of ecological sciences on design, and city-making strategies. He is co-editor with ecologist and planner Nina-Marie Lister of an upcoming volume of research and drawing titled Critical + Projective Ecologies. Reed received a master's degree in landscape architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and an AB in urban studies from Harvard. He currently is an adjunct associate professor of landscape architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design.
