The American Sports Builders Association, a non-profit trade association comprised of builders, designers and suppliers for sports facilities, has awarded Stantec for designing three outstanding sports fields. With these awards, the new fields at Noble & Greenough in Dedham, Mass.; Mystic Valley Regional Charter School in Malden, Mass.; and Worcester Academy in Worcester, Mass. are now contenders for national "outstanding field of the year" honors, to be named in December. Mystic Valley Regional Charter School's new field was designed to support the school's growing need for athletic space within the constraints of its inner city property. Constructed on a former car dealership site, the new synthetic turf athletic field supports soccer, lacrosse, practice football, and intramural softball. Similarly, Worcester Academy's Morse Field was built on 10 acres of former St. Vincent Hospital property, creating a multi-sport synthetic turf field for the Academy's outdoor programs and recreational space for the surrounding community as part of the school's investment in the neighborhood's quality of life. Students from local public elementary schools use the $3-million field for physical education classes, while neighbors use it for pick-up soccer games and stroll around the field's perimeter, which is a paved walkway. Nobles' new field was designed specifically for its field hockey program, one of the few in its league to still play on natural grass, a slower surface for the game. Stantec renovated the existing grass field into a flexible synthetic turf surface designed to better match the game of field hockey, but also support lacrosse, soccer, and other uses.
