"Stamp"ede! Olmsted Honored With a Commemorative Stamp NEW YORK, NY The U.S. Postal Service recently unveiled the 1999 commemorative stamp designs in conjunction with the Postal Stamp Mega-Event at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York. The program commenced on January 5 featuring the Happy New Year stamp celebrating the Year of the Hare, the fourth animal in the Chinese astrological calendar and seventh stamp in the Lunar New Year series. Stamp subjects include the "Father of Landscape Architecture" Frederick Law Olmsted, botanists John and William Bartram, the California Gold Rush; and Irish Immigration. American Society of Landscape Architecture Chairman of the Centennial Stamp and newly-elected Vice President of Membership Bob Callans stated to LASN that, "This is a major opportunity for Landscape Architects to utilize the stamp in their mailings to educate the public. The Olmsted stamp will also show the public that there is a historical background of the Landscape Architect in the last 100 years." ASLA New York Chapter President Ray Rolfe, Len Hopper, Art Director Ethel Kessler, New York Chapter Trustee Bill Kuhl, and Ron Robinson (pictured from left to right) were present at the unveiling of the 1999 commemorative stamp designs.
