Southern California ASLA Chapter

The Southern California ASLA Chapter gave SWA Group its top design award (Award of Excellence) for the Gubei Pedestrian Promenade in Shanghai. The project was completed in 2009.

Just as LASN was about to go to press with this Yearbook issue, the Southern California ASLA Chapter held its 2012 Quality of Life Design Awards"?u"Expressing Yourself Through the Art of Landscape Architecture""?uOctober 25 at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. It was a night for honoring firms of Los Angeles with multiple awards. The big winners of the evening, by sheer number of awards, were the Los Angeles firms of Mia Lehrer+Associates and Mel????(R)???(C)ndrez. Both firms received four awards. Mia Lehrer+Associates won Merit awards for the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, the Annenberg Community Beach House, Santa Monica, and for the Ventura Botanical Gardens Vision Plan, plus an Honor award for the Water + Life Museum, Hemet, Calif.Mel????(R)???(C)ndrez took home Honor awards for the Santa Monica College Campus Quad and the LAPD Police Administration Building, plus Merit awards for the 444 S. Flower Street Plaza Renovation and Westgate Urban Village, Phase I project.

Rios Clementi Hale Studios won three design awards, including a Design Honor Award in the Park & Rec category for the Grand Park, L.A.

The Los Angeles firm Rios Clementi Hale Studios picked up three awards: two Honor awards"?ufor the design of Grant Park at the Civic Center in Los Angeles, and a planning award for Pop Zoo, plus a Merit award for Sunset Triangle Plaza in Silver Lake.

The Mel????(R)???(C)ndrez firm of Los Angeles won four design awards, including a Honor Award for the Santa Monica College Campus Quad (July 2011 LASN issue).

AHBE Landscape Architects of Culver City also tallied three Merit awards: the Burbank Water and Power EcoCampus, Robert Kennedy Inspiration Park and for the concept for the Taichung Gateway Park Design Competition.

Mia Lehrer + Associates of Los Angeles won three design awards, plus a communications award. The Water + Life Museum in Hemet, Calif. earned the firm an Honor Award. The museum was designed by L.A. architectural firm Lehrer + Gangi Design, and is purported to be the world's first LEED Platinum Museum.

An Award of Excellence went to The SWA Group for the Gubei pedestrian promenade in Shanghei, a project completed in 2009. SWA Group also won a Merit award in planning for Anning River New South Town in Miyi County: Future Historic Ecologies, and a Merit award in communication for Landscape Infrastructure: Case Studies.
