Thabo Munyai is South Africa?EUR??,,????'???s first black landscape architect, according to The Star, a publication in South Africa. Munyai works for Johannesburg City Parks and has designed four parks for the new Cosmo City development. Munyai was introduced to landscape architecture by students from the University of Pretoria who came to his school when he was 16. The students sponsored a drawing contest, which Munyai won. He was inclined to study civil engineering, but was encouraged to visit the university. He lived in the ?EUR??,,????'??shackland?EUR??,,????'?? area of Mamelodi, a township founded in 1953 near Pretoria for blacks uprooted from other areas by the Group Areas Act. Close to one million people now reside there. His family did not have enough money to keep him in the university for long. He told the Star he would go without food to buy class art materials. By the second year, however, he received a scholarship. During his third year at the university, the Van Riet and Louw firm, under its affirmative action program, brought Munyai aboard in 1999 and provided him with financial assistance with his school fees. Munyai went on to do environmental planning and design work for the Tshwane Parks Department. He submitted park design ideas to Johannesburg City Parks (JCP), which then hired him to develop the new Cosmo City parks. His design challenges included vandal-proofing the parks and building them to last. And as the British influence still pervades, a cricket ?EUR??,,????'??pitch?EUR??,,????'?? was included. Three or four more cricket fields are proposed for next year. He also has designed new signage. His work has not gone unnoticed: Munyai was nominated for Best Employee and Best Project awards by JCP.
