Some Give WTC Memorial A Thumbs-Down

The construction of the WTC Memorial is imminent. The design by architect Michael Arad, with landscape architecture by Peter Walker, was chosen two years ago. The design calls for an above-ground, tree-lined memorial plaza and reflecting pools representing the Twin Towers surrounded by the names of the victims.

Some critics are now directing their ire at the 9/11 memorial planned for the World Trade Center site in New York City.

With construction on the memorial about to begin, a group said to include 9/11 family members, several hundred police officers, union people, firefighters and emergency workers, protested at Ground Zero on Feb. 28 against an underground memorial that will display the names of the 9/11 victims. Some called the underground locale disrespectful.

The web site asserts the Port Authority has ?EUR??,,????'??resisted calls by the Uniformed Firefighters Association for the FDNY?EUR??,,????'???s Chief of Department to conduct a safety review of the memorial plans.?EUR??,,????'??

The situation recalls last year?EUR??,,????'???s complaints about the Flight 93 memorial planned for Shanksville, Pa. In that case, some felt a crescent-shaped tree-planting resembled the crescent moon sometimes used as a Muslim symbol.

The Lower Manhattan Development Corp., an appointed 13-member panel that chose the New York memorial design, reports the memorial and museum will have 15 exits, including emergency stairwells.

Construction on the memorial and museum is scheduled to start this spring and expected to cost about $1 billion before its projected debut in 2009.
