The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) awarded six Western state departments for eight projects. AASHTO conducts four regional competitions every year annually; these awards are for the Western region. The nominees were divided by three categories: Quality of Life/Community Development, Best Use of Technology & Innovation, and Operations Excellence. The winners were also categorized by project size and cost. The winning projects are credited with improving their respective communities; improvements such as safety for schoolchildren, wildlife habitats, and restoring access to communities after mudslides. Carlos Braceras, executive director of the Utah Department of Transportation and 2018-2019 president of AASHTO stated, "Today's regional winners demonstrate how state DOTs collaborate with local communities and partners to develop innovative, multimodal solutions that keep people and goods moving by motor vehicle, scooters, bicycle, and on foot."
