Short-List Announced for Toronto Waterfront Design

The challenges for the winning team include creating a public promenade, completing the Martin Goodman Trail for pedestrians and cyclists through the central waterfront area, revitalizing the main waterfront street and developing signage/lighting.


From an entry list of 38 competitors, five international design teams have been selected by the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corp. (TWRC) to compete for the final design. The teams have until May to present their final designs.

The short list:

  1. Foster and Partners, London UK and Atelier Dreiseitl, Uberlingen, Germany.
  2. Stan Allen Architects, Princeton and Sarah Whiting and Ron Witte Architects, Princeton
  3. Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, New York and Martmnez Lapena-Torres Architects, Barcelona.
  4. West 8, Rotterdam and du Toit Allsopp Hillier, Toronto.
  5. Snxhetta, Norway, Sasaki Associates, New York, nARCHITECTS, New York, Weisz + Yoes Architecture, New York, H3, New York, Balmori Associates, New York and Halcrow Yolles HPA, New York.

The international teams have until May to present their final designs. In May, the TWRC will showcase the designs and invite public input. The jury includes Montreal Landscape Architect Claude Cormier.

Construction is set for September and completion anticipated by June 2007.
