Drought Affecting Park & Recreation Areas

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has announced the closure of three recreational trails in Nebraska, due to excessive cracking caused by drought.

Trails include MoPac East Trail, which starts near 84th and O streets, the Oak Creek Trail near Valparaiso, and a portion of the Homestead Trail from Saltillo Road to Cortland. Although trails remain safe for walkers, the trails have been closed to bicycle traffic because at certain times of the day shadows make it difficult to see the cracks.

In the past two weeks NRD crews have tried to repair the cracks, but additional ones have opened and the ones filled have re-opened. Closures add up to approximately 50 miles of trails; notices have been posted in kiosks and signs will be posted as soon as possible.
