The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has announced the closure of three recreational trails in Nebraska, due to excessive cracking caused by drought.
Trails include MoPac East Trail, which starts near 84th and O streets, the Oak Creek Trail near Valparaiso, and a portion of the Homestead Trail from Saltillo Road to Cortland. Although trails remain safe for walkers, the trails have been closed to bicycle traffic because at certain times of the day shadows make it difficult to see the cracks.
According to Dan Schulz, Natural Resources District (NRD), Resources Coordinator, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Some cracks are a couple of inches wide and more than three feet deep, there are many where we can't find the bottom because we don't have a long enough probe.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
In the past two weeks NRD crews have tried to repair the cracks, but additional ones have opened and the ones filled have re-opened. Closures add up to approximately 50 miles of trails; notices have been posted in kiosks and signs will be posted as soon as possible.
AASHTO represents highway and transportation departments in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, including air, highways, public transportation, rail, and water. For other transportation and news click here.
