Seven Student Scholarships Available
Provided By The Horticultural Research Institute

Recommended materials to apply include: general contact information, statement of financial need, personal essay, resume, transcripts and two letters of recommendation, which may come from a student advisor, instructor, employer or business associate and must be submitted directly from the recommender to HRI.

The application period for seven different scholarships offered by the Horticultural Research Institute (HRI), totaling approximately $19,000, was recently opened.

Each scholarship has distinct qualifications and different monetary awards available. The names of the scholarships and their associated awards are as follows:

• The Timothy S. and Palmer W. Bigelow, Jr. Scholarship - One $3,000 scholarship
• The Usrey Family Scholarship - One $1,000 scholarship
• The Bryan A. Champion Memorial Scholarship - One $1,000 scholarship
• The Susie & Bruce Usrey Scholarship - One $500 scholarship
• The Spring Meadow Scholarship - Three $3,500 scholarships
• The "Muggets" Scholarship - One $1,500 scholarship
• The Carville M. Akehurst Memorial Scholarship - One $1,000 scholarship

Some of the qualifications that an applicant must meet include: declaring a major in landscaping, horticulture or a related discipline, possessing at least a 2.25 grade point average and having a general interest in horticulture.

The scholarships were made possible by donations from private/public supporters of the HRI. The application period will close on September 7, 2018 and the winners will be announced in November/December, 2018.
