House transportation leaders have continued to emphasize the job generation benefits of enactment of the now-expired federal highway and transit authorization. The current short-term extension is scheduled to expire on December 18, making a further extension a must-pass bill before the end of the year.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) reportedly told Democratic colleagues that he will add a jobs creation bill to the Senate's priorities, as the nation struggles with a 10.32 percent unemployment rate. This could be a vital piece of legislation as the job market will help lead to recovery.

In a report by The Hill newspaper, Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) said that Reid's announcement came during the weekly lunch meeting of the Senate Democratic Caucus. He said that no specifics as to what the bill might contain were given, nor any indication of possible timing.

The Democrats' focus on jobs creation comes in response to the latest increase in unemployment, which broke double digits for the first time in two decades. Reid's own state of Nevada is suffering a 13 percent unemployment rate.
