The Mississippi Urban Forest Council will give away 10,000 seedlings from noon to 2 p.m. March 28 at Town Square Park. Residents can pick up free bare-root seedlings such as pecans, cypress, pin oaks and Nuttall oaks.
Residents, foresters and landscaping business owners also can take part in a free in-depth course on determining what trees are best for their needs.
“The hurricane had a tremendous impact, and the amount of canopy in the trees lost was amazing,” said Donna Yowell, executive director of the Urban Forest Council. “What’s important is for people to be able to recognize a hazard tree. Another important factor is planting the right tree in the right place.”
Kenny Muse, who has owned Groundskeepers landscaping company for about seven years, said residents are just now starting to think about replanting after the hurricane. During the class, residents can learn what types of trees will be best for the conditions where they will be planted, Page said.
