The Sebring, Fla. city council unanimously voted Dec. 1, 2009 to allow chain link fences for residential front yards.

Some council members had previously supported banning the use of chain link, judging the fencing not aesthetically pleasing and citing the less-than-inspiring look of some Miami neighborhoods where chain link is omnipresent. As that realization sunk in, the council was moved to accept fencing people could afford and allow residents some sense of security.

The new ordinance regulates the height, location and permitting of fences, walls and vegetative barriers in residential areas, and establishes ?EUR??,,????'?????<

Front yard fences or walls will have a height limit of 48-inches. If the residential lot is adjacent to a non-residential-zoned property, fences or walls may be as tall as eight feet.

Existing fences and walls will not be affected unless they compromise line-of-sight safety.
