SeamonWhiteside (SW+)

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and 5 Locations Across The Carolinas

Since its founding in 1985, SeamonWhiteside (SW+) has remained rooted in the belief that exceptional site design enhances both the built and natural environment. From the beginning, landscape architecture has been a core discipline at SW+, shaping the firm's integrated approach to civil engineering, planning, and design throughout the Southeast. At the heart of SW+ is a philosophy that blends creativity with constructability. Their landscape architecture team continues to lead with this vision, transforming spaces into lasting places where people connect, communities thrive, and the natural world is respected. Their Landscape Architects work alongside engineers and planners from concept through construction, ensuring thoughtful, integrated solutions. This collaborative approach and dedication to service reflects their mission to create spaces that inspire, support well-being, and stand the test of time. Beyond the drawing board, their commitment to bettering communities extends through GreenSquare, SW+'s philanthropic arm dedicated to giving back through service and support.

International African American Museum at Gadsden's Wharf; Charleston, SC

Located at Gadsden's Wharf in Charleston's Historic District, the African Ancestors Memorial Garden at the International African American Museum (IAAM) is a sacred site honoring the resilience and legacy of African ancestors who endured the transatlantic slave trade. The garden's design integrates native Lowcountry and African plantings, including sweetgrass fields and a palm grove. Central to the site is the Tide Tribute, a haunting water installation that fills and recedes with the tide, revealing sculptural forms that reflect both the visibility and erasure of enslaved individuals. Carefully selected materials such as stainless steel and granite mark historical structures and boundaries. The project received TIME Magazine's World's Greatest Places of 2024 and a 2024 ASLA Honor Award.
