The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) announced Scotts Miracle-Gro violated federal pesticide laws and will pay up to $12.5 million in criminal fines and civil penalties.

Scotts Miracle-Gro Company (Scotts), a producer of pesticides for commercial and consumer lawn and garden uses, has allegedly been ordered to pay over $6 million in penalties for violating federal pesticide laws under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), which governs the manufacture, distribution, and sale of pesticides.

Scotts allegedly must also spend $2 million on environmental projects and perform community service for eleven criminal violations to FIFRA.

The pesticide company has been charged with distributing or selling unregistered, canceled, or misbranded pesticides, including products with inadequate warnings or cautions. This is the largest civil settlement under FIFRA to date.

Scotts also allegedly imported pesticides into the United States without legally required documentation. More than 100 Scotts' products were allegedly in violation of FIFRA.
