City councilors Karen D?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?Andrea and Carol Rancourt worked as part of the ordinance committee to write the policy. Rancourt said she recognizes the dangers of synthetic pesticide use and that while the initial application of organic pesticides may cost the town more money as soil adapts to the change in organic pesticides, less applications are needed and cost the town less money over time.
D?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?Andrea said the town spends $90,675 per year on pesticide applications, and that she spoke with local lawn care specialists who provided a quote of $90,473 for the treatment of organic pesticides on all town property.
Although the policy prohibits the use of synthetic pesticides on town-owned property, there is an exception to allow the use of integrated pest management practices. The practices allow the use of synthetic pesticides in extreme circumstances to deal with invasive species that otherwise may not be treated with organic pesticides. If pesticides are applied, signs will be posted to notify the public when and where chemicals were used.
