San Diego ASLA 2014 Design Awards

The San Diego ASLA Chapter held its 2014 Design Awards Dec. 4, 2014 at the new Central Library in downtown San Diego's East Village. The theme was "Celebrating the Power of Place."

This year 24 projects were awarded. The jury included Bob Cardoza, FASLA, founder, CEO and chairman of NUVIS Landscape Architecture, Costa Mesa; Kelly Broughton, FASLA, director of development services, city of Chula Vista; Kathy Garcia, FASLA, city of Del Mar planning director; Ralph Roesling, lecturer, Cal Poly Pomona, and principal of Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects, San Diego; and Randy Hanna, AIA, principal at Hanna Gabriel Wells Architects, San Diego.

New this year to the chapter event were student design awards, and a San Diego stewardship award presented to Supervisor Ron Roberts, the driving force behind the new 16-acre waterfront park. Roberts is currently working on a cable car that would connect Sixth Avenue with Balboa Park, achieving John Nolen's dream of a bay to park link. Note: In 1907, the San Diego Civic Improvement Committee hired landscape architect John Nolen to complete a comprehensive plan for San Diego's development.
