Safe Digging Organization Celebrates 25 Years

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Underground Service Alert will mark its 25th anniversary in September. The non-profit organ-ization was formed in 1976 by a group of representatives from several California public utilities dedicated to ensure public safety. State law requires those intending to engage in any kind of digging project to call 800-227-2600 at least two days prior to excavation to prevent the unintentional striking of an underground structure. After receiving the call, USA serves as a communications link to any of the nearly 800 owners of underground services so that representatives from these entities can mark where underground lines are located.
