Landscape architect Richard Webel (Innocenti & Webel) designed the Elizabethan Gardens on Roanoke Island in 1953 through the auspices of the Garden Club of North Carolina.
The gardens are within the Fort Raleigh National Historic site on the north part of the island where in 1585 the British first tried to establish a permanent settlement in what was then called the Virginia Colony. (Note: Roanoke Island is off the coast of North Carolina, not to be confused with Roanoke, Va.)
When the gardens needed sprucing up and expanding some areas for public programs, Elizabethan Gardens Executive Director Horace Whitfield called on the original design firm, Innocenti & Webel, for help. Mr. Webel passed away in 2000 at the age of 100, but Mr. Webel?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s mentor, landscape architect Hermann Schulz, is still with the firm and helped administer the gardens in the mid-60s. The plan calls for expanding the entrance and exit areas, now cramped by gift and plant sales, new family program areas, opening views to the water and a larger greenhouse ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????????????(R)???????+? and maybe a thatched-roof chapel for the many weddings that take place on this historic site.
