Riverfront Park, Spokane, Washington

Dark Light Design
by Staff

The site of Expo '74, Riverfront Park has been redeveloped to cultivate a more functional open space within the city and reinforce pedestrian connections between downtown and the northern bank of the Spokane River. The design goals: create cohesive lighting strategies for different circulation types throughout the park, provide wayfinding legibility for the primary connector through the park, and provide inviting experiential lighting to establish spaces for gathering and pause.

The lighting design has two main components-circulation and experiential lighting. Circulation lighting differentiates primary and secondary circulation zones by fixture typology, luminous quality, and uniformity. Experiential lighting accents special features, focused on the water of the river's south channel.

Lighting establishes the Promenade as the primary pathway through use of a luminous pedestrian scaled column that provides high uniformity and vertical illumination. The columns were selected to provide a 360- degree distribution to highlight plantings adjacent to pathways and expand visual boundaries.

The 2023 Lighting Issue of Landscape Architect and Specifier News saw many firms submit their projects for feature consideration. This project was not chosen for a Feature in the issue, but we at LandscapeArchitect.com thought the project deserved to be showcased online . . .
