Recognizing a creative presentation of cities, the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) recognized Rios Clementi Hale Studios?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? City Plate collection with a 2010 ASLA Honor Award for Communications. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Imagining how our world might be different if everyone discussed the history, design, and development of cities at the dinner table was our inspiration,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Julie Smith-Clementi, IDSA, partner at the multi-disciplinary design firm that created the five-collection series of place. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Imagine hosting your best dinner party, using smart, chic dinnerware that gets everyone talking.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Typical of the cross-disciplinary interplay at Rios Clementi Hale Studios, the City Plates project was started by architect Jennifer Cosgrove, Assoc. AIA, who was working on the Los Angeles Civic Park landscape project. The reductive graphics of her diagram and the recognizable pattern of streets and landmarks translated well to the medium of ceramic plates.
City Plates, released in sets of four, look at cities as a graphic language of line, color, and pattern as a means to investigate the impact of cultural, economic, historical, and political forces on city form. Each of five sets has a particular conceptual framework that relates the four cities within the set to each other. Themes are: Gateways???????(R)?EUR??,,????'?EUR??,,?EUR Agglomeration, Culture???????(R)?EUR??,,????'?EUR??,,?EUR Capital(ism),Capital Migration, Empire Building ( Rebuilding) and The Grandiose City, and Future Cities (Past???????(R)?EUR??,,????'?EUR??,,?EUR Present). Each plate celebrates the beauty implicit in a city?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s form, the distinct pattern that has evolved throughout time as layers of history are inscribed into the urban landscape.
The 12"-diameter plates are available internationally through specialty retail stores, museum gift shops, and websites, in addition to notNetural?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s flagship Los Angeles location. Each $50 plate is boxed with a key indicating notable landmarks and a description of the series theme and how each city's form and history represents it. A portion of the sales (15%) of New Orleans and Brasilia plates is donated to charitable organizations working to better those cities and their citizens.
