Freedom Park at Navy Pier; San Diego, CA
Located next to the USS Midway on the San Diego waterfront, this 5.7-acre park that is currently under construction will serve as a place to honor veterans and their families while creating a new public space along the San Diego Bay. RICK served as lead consultant for the project, providing civil, traffic, water resources, surveying, and landscape architecture services alongside BSE, Triton Engineers, Ninyo & Moore, Pat Caughey, the Port of San Diego, and the USS Midway to bring this vision to life. Freedom Park will include museum-quality exhibits, native gardens, a turf parade ground, gathering spaces, and thoughtful memorials like "Footsteps to Freedom" and the Family Sacrifice Memorial.

Stagecoach Park Community Gardens; Carlsbad, CA

 
RICK's landscape architecture team collaborated with the City of Carlsbad to turn an old maintenance yard into a community space where residents can grow their own food and learn about sustainable gardening. The project area is tucked into the side of an existing park and includes 35 raised planters, a shade structure with a picnic table, a drinking fountain, an information kiosk, composting and storage facilities, garden fencing and gates, site furnishings, and decomposed granite paving throughout the site. Community members have expressed overwhelming satisfaction with the project and how the city successfully transformed the site into an open, welcoming, and enduring community asset.

San Diego International Airport Terminal 1; San Diego, CA
Officially open in the fall of 2025, the San Diego International Airport expansion has featured major involvement from RICK's landscape architecture team. Scope included the 71-acre landscape surrounding Terminal 1, the general transit plaza, the parking structure, and the facilities management campus. The team also contributed to the landscape design for the airline support building, air cargo facility, and the new administration building. Art by renowned artists is integrated throughout the site, along with LEED elements that support the airport's long-term sustainability.

RICK landscape architecture, civil, water, and traffic groups partnered with the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department to transform a challenging hillside site into a vibrant park for the Fallbrook community. The resulting 6.8-acre park features shaded picnic areas, gardens with a new all-wheels park, and a dedicated half-acre dog park with spaces for large and small breeds. A loop trail connects the site's amenities, encouraging walking, exercise, and exploration. The project incorporates solar-powered lighting, drought-tolerant planting, and efficient irrigation systems, creating a resilient community asset that will serve Fallbrook residents for years to come. Recognition: 2026 APWA Award.
