Providence, R.I. Mayor David Cicilline kicked off the Trees 2020 campaign in October, with a challenge to plant 40,000 new trees in the city by 2020.

Commercial property owners will be able to buy trees from Providence nurseries at one-third the usual price to help fulfill the new initiative aimed at adding trees to the city.

After landscape professionals purchase trees at a discounted price, they can register their new plantings with the Trees 2020 Web site. https://www.trees2020.org

Officials wanted to improve the city and a healthy tree canopy provides protection from heat and chilly winds, while replenishing oxygen in the air.

The campaign is funded by the Helen Walker Raleigh Tree Care Trust of the Rhode Island Foundation.
