Monroe Miller, 62, is retiring after 35 years as superintendent at Blackhawk Country Club in Madison, Wisconsin.
Miller started with the club in January 1973 and he leaves it as one of the most beautiful and beautifully conditioned courses in the Midwest. He also worked hard over the years to keep Blackhawk environmentally sound.
Miller was never the kind of greens superintendent who hung around the club for lunches in its restaurant. He tended to the golf course and was always the opposite of flamboyant.
Superintendents at several of the state?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s top courses began by working under Miller at Blackhawk. Miller played a major role in getting a turf research operation built adjacent to University Ridge, and that facility is now regarded as one of the best in the nation.
In 2004, Miller received the Green Section Award from the United States Golf Association, and a year later he was inducted into the Wisconsin State Golf Association?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,??s Hall of Fame.
