LASN's annual Residential Survey revealed that the most important factors Landscape Architects take into account when designing multi-family and single-family residences are environmental sustainability and resilience. This finding is supported by a special emphasis on water-wise irrigation systems and Dark Sky landscape lighting in residential projects designed in the last two years.

The second most important factor was the ability to entertain guests and usability in all seasons, backed up by the fact that outdoor entertainment systems have been the most specified amenity across multi- and single-family projects.

In terms of the design process, one participant commented, "Single-family custom homes in urban areas are getting harder and harder to get permitted in certain towns and cities in California. Rural areas are easier. Multi-family residential is typically easier to get permitted because there is a political will to do so."
