Recycling Targets Landscaping Plastic

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has launched a recycling program that aims at plastic pots, tree buckets and those ubiquitous hanging flower baskets.

The program organizers, which include the 1,500-member Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association, want to redirect the millions of pounds of garden pots that are discarded annually by contractors and nurseries.

An estimated 20 million to 30 million pounds of plastic garden refuse winds up in Minnesota landfills each year.

Under the new program, AGSI Plastics of Savage will bring its massive mobile plastic grinder to select commercial nurseries and grind up piles of pots and buckets on site.

A 44,000-pound truckload of chopped plastic can sell for roughly $16,000, said AGSI co-owners Schmitz and Rick Eidem.
