ATLANTA - Recently, the Georgia Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects welcomed members from North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts to its ASLA Tri-State Conference. ?EUR??,,????'??We had over 320 people attend and participate. The conference was a great kickoff and celebration for the National Landscape Architecture Week,?EUR??,,????'?? reports Ed Czyscon, ASLA Georgia Chapter President. ?EUR??,,????'??Linkages and Connectivity to the Future?EUR??,,????'?? served as the theme for the numerous conference speakers. According to Czyscon, some of the highlights of the event included: ASLA President Rodney Swink spoke about how the ASLA is the linkage for Landscape Architects to the future; Georgia?EUR??,,????'???s Governor Roy Barnes signed a proclamation about ?EUR??,,????'??National Landscape Architecture Week?EUR??,,????'?? in Georgia; Chick Krautler of ARC talked about the transportation issues and Livable Cities Initiatives around Atlanta, while Juanita Shearer Swink spoke about how Landscape Architects are working on transportation issues in the Raleigh, NC area; Ed McBrayer spoke about the PATH Foundation and their role in developing and funding trails/Greenways in Atlanta and throughout Georgia; Glenn Acomb of University of Florida spoke on the connectivity in open space development in community design; Bill Laubmann spoke about his involvement in Resort developments in the Middle East, Europe and Caribbean; Sherry Plaster Carter discussed safety issues and how design issues have changed since Sept. 11, specifically the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design; Jim Cothran talked about historic garden restorations in South Carolina; Bill Fanning of PSMJ spoke on the business connectivity of Landscape Architects; Jim Leatzow spoke about how to keep your LA business out of claims and attorneys; Tim Johnson of Penn State University spoke about Photoshop and computer renderings; and Mike Linn presented a 3-hour workshop how to use tricks of Wendy?EUR??,,????'???s and McDonalds in graphics. The conference concluded with a banquet celebration where attendees viewed the 48 submittals participating in the awards program. After ASLA President-Elect Paul Morris, FASLA, spoke to the group, 28 award winners were presented. In addition, the Georgia Chapter ASLA Medal was given to Ed McBrayer of the PATH Foundation, and the Edith H. Henderson, FASLA Georgia Chapter Service Award was presented to Becky Kirk. The next Tri-State Conference will take place in three years in North Carolina. The Georgia Chapter is researching the possibility of creating an annual conference.
