Avital Andrews, lifestyle editor of the Sierra Club magazine, asserted that one of the big things an eco-aware American can do right is to go "green" over the holidays with a real tree. It may sound a bit counterintuitive because environmentalists say all the time, "reusable this, reusable that." Andrew points out that the tree was most likely grown on a farm, capturing CO2 and supporting agriculture, "whereas the fake tree was very likely manufactured in a factory in China using a lot of PVC and lead, which are all known to be toxic chemicals." Besides, Christmas trees are grown on American soil using American workers, and their growth benefits the landscape industry by requiring fertilizer and tree tools. Merry Christmas, and feel good about having a real tree in your house this season.
