Found at 101 Southside Dr, DPR Design of Charlotte, North Carolina, helped develop Rally, a pickleball, food, and craft cocktail destination. Flanked by two buildings and over 27,000 square feet of commercial and recreational space, the landscape architecture firm connected existing structures to blend indoor/outdoor spaces, seating areas, and flora and fauna. Concrete plinth/wall elements interact with custom steel planters to engage public and private spaces. A fabricated aluminum logo has a translucent plexi backer allowing for reverse illumination. The project is set on 1.9 acres and was completed in June 2023.

Custom-colored pickleball surfacing was added as a connection to the inside and outside. Four courts were added to allow for tournaments and various levels of play simultaneously. Corten steel planters were added with plantings like Rosa x Meijocos and Yucca Filamentosa color guard to soften the space.

Custom-tiered benches allow for flexible seating. The courts are located below street level, so steps are necessary. Native plantings were added to minimize maintenance and irrigation within the custom steel planters that help define seating nooks.

Seven blue powder-coated Landscape Forms Bola bike racks were specified. Decomposed granite in a tan color was placed beneath the racks. Various native plantings line the bike racks for depth.

In the LOSO neighborhood of Charlotte, North Carolina, a transformation occurred to redefine the intersection of sports, dining, and community gatherings. At 101 Southside Dr, DPR Design repurposed two existing structures into a vibrant pickleball destination that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor experiences. As the landscape architect and civil engineer for this ambitious project, DPR Design faced the challenge of unifying disparate elements into a cohesive, multifunctional space catering to serious athletes and casual visitors alike.

The Rally Pickleball complex stands as a testament to the power of adaptive reuse in landscape architecture. The project's primary goal was to create a seamless connection between two existing structures, transforming them into a food and beverage hub complemented by state-of-the-art pickleball facilities. The result is a harmonious blend of indoor and outdoor courts, outdoor seating areas, a restaurant, and versatile recreation spaces that cater to a wide range of activities and social interactions.

From the outset, DPR Design, a landscape architecture firm based in Charlotte, North Carolina, recognized the unique challenges presented by the site's existing conditions. The two structures, each with its character and history, required a unifying vision to become part of a greater whole. Additionally, the varying grades between the buildings and the street posed significant design hurdles. Rather than viewing these as obstacles, the team at DPR Design saw them as opportunities for innovation.

The firm's approach to the design process was both aspirational and pragmatic, striking a delicate balance between the client's vision and the practical constraints of the site. This philosophy is evident in the creative solutions employed to address the grade differences. The design team conceived a series of custom planters, benches, and seating elements that not only resolved the technical challenges but also enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the space. These features serve multiple purposes: they provide functional solutions to topographical issues, create inviting areas for relaxation and socialization, and contribute to the overall visual cohesion of the complex.

One of the project's standout features is the quartet of outdoor pickleball courts. These courts are more than just playing surfaces, they're the centerpiece of an outdoor recreation area that includes player lounges and various activity spaces. The design of these areas demonstrates DPR Design's commitment to creating environments that foster community and encourage active lifestyles.

The integration of indoor and outdoor spaces was a critical aspect of the project. The landscape architecture team worked diligently to ensure a smooth transition between the repurposed buildings and the new outdoor amenities. This seamless flow extends to the dining areas, where patrons can enjoy meals and refreshments while taking in the lively atmosphere of the pickleball courts and surrounding landscape.

While the project didn't rely on cutting-edge materials or technologies, DPR Design's innovative use of traditional construction methods set this project apart. The team's creativity shone through in their ability to apply familiar techniques in unique ways, resulting in solutions that are both beautiful and functional. This approach not only solved design challenges but also ensured that the project remained within budget and maintenance considerations.

One of the most significant challenges faced by DPR Design was balancing the stringent code requirements with the ambitious goals of the project. The team's objective was to meet all regulatory standards without compromising the aesthetic and functional aspirations of the design. Through meticulous planning and creative problem-solving, they were able to seamlessly integrate code-compliant elements in a way that enhances rather than detracts from the user experience. Visitors to the Rally Pickleball complex are unlikely to notice the careful considerations that went into meeting these requirements, as they blend effortlessly into the overall design.

The success of the project is evident in the final result: a multidimensional pickleball facility that goes beyond the conventional notion of a sports complex. The inclusion of a coffee shop, bar, and restaurant services alongside the indoor and outdoor pickleball courts creates a destination that caters to a wide range of interests and activities. This diversity of offerings ensures that the space remains vibrant and well-utilized throughout the day, fostering a sense of community and becoming a true local landmark.

DPR Design's landscape architecture team has played a crucial role in tying all these elements together. The outdoor spaces serve as the connective tissue that unites the repurposed buildings, sports facilities, and dining areas into a cohesive whole. Careful consideration was given to circulation patterns, ensuring that visitors could move easily between different areas of the complex. The landscape design also incorporates elements that provide visual interest and create comfortable microclimates, making the outdoor spaces enjoyable year-round.

Sustainability was another key consideration in the landscape design. The team incorporated native plantings that require minimal maintenance and irrigation, reducing the environmental impact of the project. These plantings not only contribute to the aesthetic appeal of the site but also provide habitat for local wildlife, enhancing the ecological value of the urban setting.

The Rally Pickleball project exemplifies the potential of thoughtful landscape architecture to transform underutilized urban spaces into vibrant community assets. By repurposing existing structures and skillfully integrating them with new outdoor amenities, DPR Design has created a destination that serves multiple functions while maintaining a strong sense of place.

As landscape architects and civil engineers, the design team demonstrated that with creativity, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of both client needs and community context, it's possible to overcome significant design challenges. The result is a space that not only meets the growing demand for pickleball facilities but also provides a versatile venue for social interaction, dining, and recreation.

The success of the Rally Pickleball complex serves as an inspiration for future projects, showcasing how landscape architecture can play a pivotal role in reimagining urban spaces for the benefit of communities. As cities continue to evolve and adapt to changing recreational needs, projects like this will undoubtedly serve as valuable case studies for landscape architects and urban planners alike. The project was completed in June 2023.
