Course Description:
The design and implementation of urban stormwater treatment facilities often times results in infrastructure that is not compatible with the community aesthetics and often is a neighborhood eyesore. Application of creative landscape techniques through planning and design offer the opportunity to create site amenities functioning as stormwater management facilities and add elements of beauty (rainwater art). This "artistic engineering" may seem to be an oxymoron, but can also provide an additional hidden advantage to the community with a heightened awareness of the importance stormwater as a resource. Integrating "art and beauty" into infrastructure can result in greater community satisfaction and perceived value since water provides an opportunity to create a focal point through inspiration and vision. Specialized landscape design strategies are discussed which apply different techniques and methods of transforming stormwater facility design through creativity to provide added value to the community.

Learning Objectives:

  • Creative landscaping techniques incorporating dry-weather and wet weather drainage
  • Site stormwater management requirements
  • Explore the many options for enriching landscapes aesthetically through site, sound and composition of stormwater management systems
